The year is almost over, and today I'm reflecting on everything that has happened in 2023. After announcing my decision to quit my job as a physio, I decided to share all the knowledge I gained about ACL's and knees throughout my carreer. So here's what I did in 2023:
• I wrote a series of 6 articles for the Dutch magazine SPORTgericht about knee pain after ACL reconstruction, including pain related to the gait pattern, pain related to Hoffa's fat pad and hamstring-related pain.
• I translated these Dutch articles into a blog series for Team ACL. Besides the topics mentioned above, I created two extra blogs about patellofemoral pain after ACL reconstruction. The final blog will be released in Januari 2024. If you are a member of Team ACL, you can read the blogs here.
• Together with the Austrian educational company Physiozentrum für Weiterbildung in Vienna, I created an e-learning about traumatic knee injuries. The way they put together an e-learning is completely different from anything I have seen so far! My e-learning consists of a combination of short theoretical and practical videos, animations, brief text segments, and interactive assignments, with each module specifically tailored to optimise the learning process. The e-learning cover diagnosis of ligamentous knee injuries and concomitant injuries (as meniscus and cartilage), as well as initial treatment and advice on returning to sports. It will be launched at the end of January 2024. And for clarification: it will be in English, not in German. I'm so curious to hear your thoughts on it!
• In addition to the above mentioned articles and blogs, I published another Dutch-language article and 5 English peer-reviewed articles, based on my work at the Anna Hospital. Of course, with lots of work from all co-authors!
• Together with my colleagues I organised the second edition of the European Sports Orthopedic Congress.
• I gave 8 lectures and courses in the Netherlands, and was invited to lecture at an international congress twice.
• I had the opportunity to join the new rehabilitation committee of ESSKA. It's truly fantastic that an organisation orginally founded for orthopedic surgeons als recognised the value of rehabilitation!
Nex year, I will focus entirely on my work as a sports orthopedic researcher at the Anna Hospital & Anna TopSupport, where I thoroughly enjoy my job. Exciting projects, collaborations, and conferences are on the horizon, and I'm very curious to see what I can include in this overview at the end of 2024!
I wish you all a warm and cosy Christmas and a knee-healthy 2024!

Past Friday and Saturday I visited the ESSKA Speciality Days in Warsaw, Poland, together with my colleague Joris de Kort. During ESMA's ACL session on Friday morning, I was invited to speak about adolescent ACL rehab. We had a great session with interesting talks and I really enjoyed being able to present in front of all these "big names"! This conference also gave the opportunity to finally meet several colleagues in person, who I've been only meeting online up until now. Two very succesful days in Poland!

This Monday and Tuesday we had a visit of our Norwegian colleagues Anne Gro Heyn Faleide and Ingunn Fleten Mo, with whom we'll start joint ACL projects in the upcoming months. I enjoyed hosting them, showing them around in our hospital and in the lovely village of Geldrop, and talking all things ACL for two days! Looking forward to meeting them again in Bergen next year! |

Had a blast during the European Sports Orthopedic Congress 2023 in the Philips football stadium last Friday! As a member of the organising committee I wasn't able to hear all amazing lectures about athletic hip and groin injuries from our international faculty, but I enjoyed running around, making sure everything was as we planned, and talking to old and new friends! Thanks to the faculty, all attendees and my colleagues who made this day another one I will never forget!

I love sharing my knowledge and therefore decided to write a series of articles about knee pain after ACL reconstruction for the Dutch magazine SPORTgericht. These articles summarize lots of practical experiences from my time working as a sports physio.
Because I also wanted this content to be available in English, Team ACL invited me to write a series of 8 blog articles for their members! These 8 blogs cover recognition and treatment of knee pain after ACL reconstruction due to changes in gait pattern, patellofemoral pain, Hoffa's fat pad, and the hamstring muscles.
I really hope this helps health care professionals who deal with patients after ACL reconstruction!

I've spent last Thursday and Friday in Vienna, Austria. Together with a great team of Physiozentrum für Weiterbildung we were shooting practical and theoretical videos for my "acute knee injury diagnosis" e-learning, which will be launched by the end of this year. I'm looking forward to share my knowledge with all of you!

Happy to announce the publication of our Delphi study on adolescent ACL rehabilitation at Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine! A group of 20 International rehab experts cooperated in three Delphi rounds to create a practice guideline for 10- to 18-year-old athletes with ACL injury or after ACLR.
You'll find the free full text at the website of OJSM.

I've had an inspiring afternoon yesterday. ProCare B.V. and Soccerdoc had organised a Biodex User Meeting, for all Dutch and Flemish physical therapists working with isokinetic devices. On behalf of the Anna Hospital and Anna TopSupport, I was allowed to share our experiences with using the Biodex during ACL rehabilitation and how reference values could help us deciding when an athlete is ready to return to sports after ACL reconstruction. Of course I told everyone about our website www.aclreferencevalues.nl which is of much value in this! |

I've spent my weekend in Rennes, France, were I was invited to lecture during the 9th edition of the Journées Francophones de Kinésithérapie. A large physical therapy congress with around 2000 attendees. I lectured about the results of our international Delphi study on adolescent ACL rehabilitation. A joint project of the Anna Hospital, Máxima Medisch Centrum and 20 international rehab experts. The paper will be online soon..

Had a brilliant time in Bergen, Norway, last week, where I was invited to be an opponent of Anne Gro Heyn Faleide while defending her dissertation entitled "It's all in my head now. Readiness for return to sports after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction." We had a thorough and very joyful discussion and she succesfully obtained her PhD title!
I'm thankful to Eivind Inderhaug for the invitation and to Per-Henrik Randsborg and Trude Gundersen for preparing me so well as a committee member. I really enjoyed my days in the snow and talking with everyone about common interests, which - by the way - did not only include ACL surgery and rehab.

Yesterday we had the kick-off meeting of the ESSKA consensus on meniscus rehabilitation. A very special consensus, since both orthopedic surgeons and (former) physical therapists are part of the steering group. The meeting was a very interesting with a good explanation about the consensus proces by Philip Beaufils and introducting of the members of the steering group. I'm thankful for the invitation and really excited to be part of this project!

Last Tuesday, I was invited to teach a course about return to sports after ACL reconstruction. A very enthousiastic group of Dutch physical therapists attended the course. We discussed the importance of on-field rehab and what the ideal return to sports battery should look like. I really enjoyed the day!

Last Thursday and Friday I attended the Dutch Orthopedic Congress. Besides listening to other interesting talks, I was on stage too. I was invited to speak about innovations in recovery of ACL patients and was allowed to present the results of one of our newest studies. I had a great time catching up with old and new friends in the orthopedic field!

After 15 years of being a (sports) physio, with the knee always having my special interest, I decided to leave this job. It’s been a journey, it took me quite a while to make this decision, but being a physio doesn’t make me happy anymore. I will continue working as a post-doc researcher in sports orthopedics at the Anna Hospital, the Netherlands. I love doing this and ‘discovering’ things to make day-to-day practice a bit easier and better. This will still give me a connection with physios around the world, but in a different way than it used to be.
This new path creates an opportunity to finally realise an English version of my website!
